The no-motivation state
A named pattern in psyche-observation. Promoted on self-attestation, not on 3-instance count — Denys has stated it explicitly recurs:
“That state of having no motivation, not seeing any purpose in things, is something that represents me from time to time.” — The recurring shape
Shape
- Terrible mood on wake, without a legible local cause.
- No pull toward work, no pull toward optional/discretionary activity, no pull toward direction-setting either.
- Meaning-question surfaces: what is important to me, what would I like to do — unresolved, produces a “no-me” collapse rather than a plan.
- Escape move: seek presence of other people (library, shops) not for the errand but to not be alone with the feeling.
- Contradictions surface as fresh: things previously wanted (e.g. clickhouse job) suddenly read as boring / unimportant on this day.
Working hypothesis on mechanism
Two candidate drivers, likely compounding:
- Empty work-space → meaning-question → collapse. When work-pull drops, the vacuum surfaces the meaning question. The meaning question, unresolved, produces the state. Corollary: staying busy would mask this, not solve it. Source: Denys’s own framing on [[2026-07-02#meta-observation—events-and-non-events|Meta-observation — events and non-events]].
- Accumulated low-grade friction with no counter-weight. A day of small aversions (traffic, crowds, bureaucratic drain, aggressive-frame incident, war news) with zero positive charge landing. See 2026-07-01 as the feeder day. On its own probably survivable; layered on top of (1), decisive.
Neither is proven yet. Both need date-tagged repeats to be more than plausible stories.
Watch-list for future instances
For each occurrence, tag the entry with:
- Was work-pull absent or present that day?
- Did any accumulation-day precede it? (Look back 24–48h.)
- Was there recent news-of-war? (Speculative; not yet linked to Denys’s state — wife’s hypothesis on Wife’s hypothesis about the son concerned the son. Tracking anyway to see whether it correlates.)
- Which “previously wanted → now boring” contradictions surfaced?
- What ended the state (if it ended before file-time)?
Enough of these and the drivers stop being hypotheses.
Instances
- 2026-07-02 — the entry where this pattern was named.
Non-instances (counter-evidence)
(none yet — important to collect; days that should have triggered by the hypothesis but didn’t are the falsifier)
What this is not
- Not depression as a clinical claim. A recurring state, self-observed, without prejudice on cause.
- Not a decision-relevant signal on its own. Statements made inside this state (e.g. “ClickHouse is boring”) should be re-checked outside it before being acted on — see The ClickHouse contradiction (fresh).
