Loneliness
Question
What is Denys’s loneliness actually made of — and what would move it?
Dimensions
- Quantity vs. quality of contact — is the gap in how many people, or in the depth/kind of what happens with the people who are there?
- Specific-person vs. general-social — a missing particular relationship (an old friend, a peer, a mentor) vs. a diffuse social hunger.
- Loneliness-in-presence vs. loneliness-in-absence — does it lift when others are around, or persist through the presence of family / colleagues / crowds?
- Family vs. friends vs. peers — different tiers plausibly meet different needs; loneliness may be lopsided by tier.
- Method of investigation — the how is part of the question. Naming it is easy; interrogating it is not.
Constraints
- First named as morning-affect on Morning — same state as the two prior days (“very lonely”), during the low-state exit day. Was overshadowed by the task-lift and not developed.
- Reopened on 2026-07-05 as a live concern to investigate actively — Denys explicitly flagged he doesn’t yet know how.
- On 2026-07-06 Denys coupled it directly to no-motivation-state — “tightly related… solve one, get two.” His framing, not the wiki’s. Makes a testable prediction: a probe that moves one should move the other.
- Currently zero-data: no measurements, no comparisons across contexts, no baseline.
- Reactive-only observation risk: if only ever noticed during low-state, will never be separable from no-motivation-state.
Options
(Empty. Any concrete probe belongs here as it’s tried.)
Current lean
The loneliness is at least partly structural, not personal (2026-07-10): the mechanism that used to produce friends (school / uni / first jobs / on-site colleagues) is absent in the current delft + remote-work + trailing-spouse + kid + mid-career stack. Doesn’t decide the question — but re-shapes it from “what’s wrong with me” to “what replacement mechanism, run by whom.” Method-of-investigation still needs to shape up, but now with a first dimension of the answer to test against.
Dimensions surfaced so far
- Structural (place + life stage + role). 2026-07-10 — Dutch friend-groups locked in from school/uni; delft small + university-weighted (open population is transient students); trailing-spouse move gives no on-site colleagues / no chosen entry; kid + partnered + mid-career is structurally the hardest stage for friend formation anywhere.
- Household-level, not individual. 2026-07-10 — Denys’s wife also has no friends in delft. That collapses the initial “she has weak-ties via work; only Denys is stuck” reading. The friend-forming mechanism isn’t running for either of them, so this is a household problem, not a Denys-specific one. “We have no friends” may still hide two different needs (his social profile ≠ hers), but the availability of friends is equally zero on both sides.
- Loneliness-in-presence, tier-specific. 2026-07-11 — felt very lonely at the beach while with Anna and Alan. Answers the in-presence-vs-in-absence dimension: it does not lift with family presence, it persists through it. And it’s lopsided by tier — family presence is saturated (“JUST three of us, every single day”), the friends/peers/community tier is at zero, and family does not substitute for it.
- The want is communal/group, not only dyadic — and partly for Alan. 2026-07-11 — the barbecue-with-mother’s-friends memory reframes the 2026-07-10 “evening companion” (dyadic) framing: the missing thing is a scene / circle, the ambient group life a child absorbs. Carries a generational-transmission motive — he wants Alan to have that childhood, so friendship is now also something he wants to provide, not only to receive.
Open sub-questions
- Is the loneliness continuous, or does it only surface during low-state / accumulation days? Requires deliberate check-ins on neutral days to separate.
- What would count as evidence the loneliness was moving — inbound messages, initiated meet-ups, felt sense of being seen, something else? Without a signal, no probe can be evaluated.
- Which relationships already exist that could be leaned on if the barrier is action-side, not availability-side? The friend-reconnection on 2026-07-03 happened once as a downstream effect of the task-lift — is that a repeatable move or a one-off blip?
- Is the loneliness about other people, or about something the presence of others would only partially answer? (Cross-link to find-pull — pull may require a witness, and vice versa.)
- Is there a component that’s about specific lost connections (people, places, past selves) vs. absent-in-general connection?
Decision log
- 2026-07-05 — Filed. Elevated from an open psyche-observation pattern candidate to a project on Denys’s explicit ask (Notes for the next week (explicit, from Denys)). Trigger: reopened today after being named on 2026-07-03 and dropped. Denys flagged wanting to investigate more actively, method unclear — the how is the first thing to shape.
- 2026-07-10 — First structural dimensions filed (2026-07-10): the loneliness is at least partly a consequence of a friend-forming mechanism that’s absent by construction in the current delft / remote-work / trailing-spouse / kid / mid-career setup. Correction after filing: Denys’s wife also has no friends in Delft — the “she has weak-ties via work” split was wrong, and the problem is household-level, not Denys-specific. Belongs on the relocation ledger as an input, not a separate topic.
- 2026-07-11 — Two dimensions closed/sharpened (2026-07-11): (1) in-presence — lonely while with family at the beach; the gap does not lift with family presence, so it’s tier-specific not general; (2) communal, not dyadic — the want is a group/scene (barbecue memory), with a parenting motive (wants it for Alan). Family tier saturated, friends/peers/community tier at zero.
