Find pull

Question

What actually pulls Denys forward — and how does he tell when it’s pull versus something else?

Dimensions

  • Pull vs. adjacent categories — obligation, curiosity, ambition, guilt, avoidance-in-disguise. Currently no clean way to distinguish them from the inside.
  • Historical instances — moments that had the shape of pull (retrospectively identifiable), even if not named as such at the time.
  • Current channels tested — work (SME direction), business (nature-business), habits, external goals. All tested; none currently pulling.
  • Absence vs. concealment — is the pull-sense genuinely offline, or is it happening under a different name (task-completion, professional pride, family duty)?

Constraints

  • On 2026-07-05 Denys could not recall the last time he felt genuinely pulled forward. Not a mood observation — a category-level absence.
  • Three off-the-shelf goal candidates from the wiki (establish-as-sme first-ship, an SME 6-month north-star, and a 90-day nature-business probe) tested and none pulled.
  • Every planning move (goal-setting, prioritization, top-5 fill) is subordinated to this: without pull, external goals will keep failing to move him.
  • Pull-sense-offline hypothesis is only ~24h old at file-time. Don’t over-fit to a single observation.

Options

(Empty. Options here are diagnostic angles, not answers. To be filled as they’re tried.)

Current lean

No lean. The load-bearing task is diagnosis, not commitment. Any commitment made before pull is diagnosed will replay the pattern surfaced on 2026-07-05.

Open sub-questions

  • Push-side probe: what do you resent doing? What would you refuse to still be doing in five years? Aversion is often more accessible than desire when desire is dim.
  • Expectation-gap probe: what did 20-year-old Denys assume adult-Denys would be doing that he isn’t? Data on your own “good version” model, not regret.
  • Historical re-scan: were there moments in the past that had the felt-signature of pull but got filed under obligation / curiosity / task? What was the shape of them?
  • Is pull continuously present in other people and Denys lacks access, or is it episodic even for people who “have it”? Untested assumption worth naming.
  • Does the drive to investigate the pull-question itself count as a pull-instance? (Meta-check — if yes, at least one pull-channel is live.)
  • Cross-question with loneliness: does the offline pull-sense have a social component — e.g. pull requires a witness, and there isn’t one available?

Decision log

  • 2026-07-05 — Filed. Elevated from a weekly-review note (Notes for the next week (explicit, from Denys)) to an open-tab because the question is load-bearing over months, touches every other theme, and cannot be shortcut by external goal-setting. Trigger: three pre-existing goal candidates tested and none pulled; the “when did you last feel pulled?” question returned “I don’t remember.” Diagnosed as a category-level absence, not a preference-mismatch.
